Deoria Tal: An Enchanting Lake in the Hidden Hamlet of Sari Village

The spiral roads of Uttarakhand are full of wonders. The terraced hills, the rhododendron trees, the foliage flowers, and the snow-laden peaks greet you as you travel on them. The tiny hamlets of the state fill you with curiosity and their simple way of life leave you impressed.

Deoria Tal Sari Village

One such village of Uttarakhand is Sari. The scenic village is located at an elevation of 2000 meters. Dotted with the oak and rhododendron trees the village of Sari is not just picturesque but also exists in the vicinity of the famous Deoria Lake and is the base camp for Tungnath for many.

Base camp for Tungnath and Deoria Tal

Sari Village serves as the base camp for Tungnath trek – the highest Shiva temple of the world. Many take the route via Deoria Tal to reach Tunganath. Deoria Tal is just 2 km away from Sari Village.

The lake gives a panoramic view of mountains like Chaukhamba, Nilkantha, Bandarpunch, Kedar Range, and Kalanag.

How to reach Sari Village

Since we were coming from Delhi, we took the Haridwar route and traveled via Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, and Ukimath, stopped over at Chopta to do the Tungnath, Chandrashila trek and then came backward to Sari.

However, most stop at Sari and then travel ahead to Chopta- Tungnath.

Nearest Airport

The nearest airport is Dehradun Airport. From Dehradun, you may take a private taxi to Sari Villages. But we recommend road routes.

By Public Transport

You can take buses to Ukimath from Delhi’s ISBT, or take a bus to Rishikesh and then a taxi to Sari village.

Where to Stay

There are limited homestays and guest houses at Sari Village. We chose to stay at Cafe Buransh. Cafe Buransh offers limited rooms with a balcony and a restaurant. The room cost us close to 3800 INR with complimentary breakfast. The food at Cafe Buransh was simple and tasty. Please don’t expect fancy things here. Being a remote location often even necessities are hard to get.

Deoria Tal Sari Village Trek

Trek to Chopta

As you know we did Chopta Tungnath and Chandrashila Trek together with the Sari Village and Deoria Tal trek. Tungnath Temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world. Further up there’s the Chandrashila Summit. We completed that trek first and then came back sauntering to Sari Village. Trek to Deoria Tal

Deoria or Devaria Tal is an emerald lake situated at a height of 2438 meters above sea level. The pristine lake gives you panoramic views of mountain peaks like Chaukhamba, Nilkantha, Bandarpunch, Kedar Range, and Kalanag. The lake falls under Kedarnath musk deer sanctuary and if you are lucky you’ll get a glimpse of the deer too.

The Legend of Deoria Tal

Deoria Tal means the lake where the Gods bathed. In the Hindu faith, the devas used to bath in this lake and it is also known as Indra Sarovar. Many locals believe that this lake was built by the mighty Pandav- Bhim to quench his thirst.

Camping at Deoria Tal

Many choose to stay overnight at Deoria Tal and gaze at the stars on a clear night. However, since we weren’t comfortable with the sanitation at the spot so we decided to descend to our stay- Cafe Buransh which was less than 2 Km from the spot.

Final Words

The beautiful lake of Deoria Tal is a must-visit for the lovers of nature. We suggest you combine the Tungnath Trek along with Deoria Tal trek to make the most of this magical experience.
