Colombo: Soak up the Colonial Charm in the Sri Lankan Capital

Many would skip Colombo saying there’s nothing much to see. But we were too intrigued not to stop at the Capital. The beauty of Colombo lies in colonial architecture, the colorful tuk-tuks, the trains by the beach, and the beach itself.

It was our last stop at Sri Lanka, so were already a bit sad-we were experiencing that traveler’s sadness that happens to most in the last leg of the journey. It comes with a realization actually – that says the trip is about to end.

Soaking Up the Sun & Sand in The Beach Town of Mirissa

Hills. tea estates and beaches, it was amazing to note how diverse the little country of Sri Lanka is. Up till now, we had explored the Buddhist temples, the historical site of Sigiriya, and the hills of Nuwara Elia.

From the hills of Nuwara Elia, we headed towards the beach town of Mirissa. It took us approximately 6 hours to reach our destination by road. However, a better option can be taking the train until there.

At Sri Lanka, our vacation was going as per the itinerary. The experience of our first two destinations – Sigiriya and Habarana were just all right. But we were thrilled for Nuwara Elia- the teacup of Sri Lanka.

103 miles from Colombo, lies the mini England of Sri Lanka – Nuwara Elia. The verdant tea gardens, the colonial structures, lake, and the rose gardens give a British vibe to the place.

Kandy – Sri Lanka’s Spiritual Abode

For the inquisitive traveler, Sri Lanka has many things to offer, be it culture, nature, or history. Our trip to Sri Lanka was packed with all these delights. Hobnobbing with the gorgeous locales and culture, we reached Kandy from Sigiriya. The Lion Fortress at Sigiriya was a trip back to ancient times and the experience had left us overwhelmed.

An untamed mix of nature, wildlife, pilgrimage, beaches, and adventure find their home at serene Sri Lanka. The island of the orient in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a tourist’s dream come true. Being an Indian resident, traveling to the neighboring country wasn’t that a hassle, given the fact that Sri Lanka offers visa on arrival for Indian residents.
